Most people, not just children, have trouble knowing what to write about. Questions of where to start quickly turn into self-doubt, boredom, or fear of getting it wrong. So, week one, we will start with The Gratitude Journal.
Why do this?
- We all have things to be thankful for, all of us.
- A safe space to write personal thoughts is sometimes just the right catalyst to get creativity going.
- A writing routine leads to more writing.
It’s not always realistic to give a creative prompt and expect a huge reaction or response.
To help your student get started, we will start with a few basic questions:
- What are you thankful for today? Why?
- What has been challenging today?
- How did you meet that challenge?
- What are your Gratitude Goals for tomorrow?
My hope is the students will take 5 minutes to connect to their voice, to begin a journaling routine, and to spend some time reflecting each day on challenges and goal-setting.
This journal is theirs. They can scribble, they can draw, they can collage, so many creative possibilities. Or, they can simply write. They can share, or they can keep it private. There is no wrong response, as long as your student is establishing confidence in their abilities to tell their own story.
Once your student feels comfortable writing in their own voice about themselves, creativity will follow! Just you wait!
